The Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum was opened in 1996 to tell the tragedy of the atomic bombing and to convey to the world our wish for peace.
On August 9, 1945, a single atomic bomb instantly reduced the city of Nagasaki to a ruin. There were many victims. The exhibits in this museum show what happened in Nagasaki that day. We would like for as many people as possible to understand both the reality of the atomic bombing, and our sincere wish that Nagasaki be the last place bombed by a nuclear weapon.
You can hear the ticking of a wall clock. This sound counts down the seconds to the instant which defined Nagasaki’s destiny.
This wall clock was found in a house near the Sanno Shrine in Sakamoto-machi, which is around 800m southeast of the hypocenter. Despite sustaining tremendous damage in the enormous blast, the barely surviving clock face shows the moment the atomic bomb exploded.
