Shadows Left by the Heat Rays

A shadow is made by blocking light. A similar phenomenon to this was generated in the heat rays of the atomic bomb. Only the surfaces exposed directly to the heat rays were burned and discolored, but the unexposed surfaces retained their original color, thus creating the shadow-like images by the difference in those colors. The instantaneous flash emitted from the fireball imprinted the same shadow-like images at 11:02 a.m. in many places throughout Nagasaki.

The middle of these three photos is "Silhouettes of a soldier and a ladder" which were left on a wall. It was taken in the Nagasaki fortress headquarters in Minami-Yamatemachi about 4.4 kilometers south of the hypocenter.

The coal tar paint on the wall was torn off from the parts exposed to the heat rays, but the paint color of the parts which were shaded by the ladder and the standing soldier remained the same.
