In the town which was reduced to a heap of debris by the atomic bombing, many injured people waited for help.
Unfortunately, however, Nagasaki Medical College, which should've been the medical treatment center, was completely destroyed. Many doctors and nurses became injured as well. People who could take part in the relief activities were too few and medicines for treatment were too little. In addition, the railroad and many roads were cut off. Yet, the relief activities began at any cost with few staff and medicines for medical treatment. At night, when the news of the tragic state of Nagasaki became widely known, rescue teams were dispatched from nearby towns. They provided food and treatment for the injured and suffering people.
Sadly enough, though, nobody knew about radioactive rays in those days. People involved in the relief activities were also exposed to strong radiation and they suffered the effects of radiation damage.
