As the mission of an atomic-bombed city, Nagasaki has spent the post-war years telling the world of the threat of nuclear weapons, and persevering for the realization of lasting world peace.
The mayor of Nagasaki reads out the Nagasaki Peace Declaration at the annual Nagasaki Peace Ceremony on the 9th August. It is a message from the atomic-bombed city of Nagasaki to the people of the world, declaring that we shall not give up the fight to abolish nuclear weapons.
Nagasaki and Hiroshima are working together to encourage cities around the world to cooperate in the fight for the elimination of nuclear weapons. The “Hiroshima – Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Exhibition” is held overseas, and exhibits photographs and artifacts which testify to the reality of the atomic bombing. Further measures are being taken to achieve a “world without nuclear weapons”. These include the “Mayors for Peace”, which is composed of cities around the world, and the “National Council of Japan Nuclear Free Local Authorities”, whose members are Japanese local governing bodies who have declared themselves to be nuclear-free zones.
Nagasaki shall continue its efforts until the day nuclear weapons have disappeared from the face of this earth.
