Urakami Cathedral, then the largest cathedral in East Asia, was located only 500 meters east-northeast of the hypocenter. Almost all of it collapsed and burned and turned into a horrible state from the atomic bombing leaving only its outer brick wall standing in the ruins.
This small part of the wall that remained standing on the south of the cathedral is reproduced along with the ruins. The statues were blackened by the heat rays and the flame. The stone pillars were moved from their original positions by the blast.
There are four statues here. The rightmost statue is called the statue of Saint Agnes. The original statue is now exhibited in the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
By the way, a part of the actual wall has been set up as it was near the hypocenter monument. It stands in the park just outside the entrance of the Atomic Bomb Museum. If you haven't seen it yet, please stop by to take a look at it.
