This is a life-size model of the atomic bomb which was dropped on Nagasaki.
The bomb was 3.25m in length, 1.52m in diameter, and weighed 4.5t. Its rotund shape earned it the nickname, “Fat Man”.
Fat Man was an “implosion type” bomb with a core of plutonium encased in explosives. When these explosives were detonated, the plutonium was compressed in on itself which created nuclear fission. Of the energy released by the atomic bomb, around 50% is said to have been released as a blast, 35% as heat rays, and 15% as radiation.
The monitor shows footage of the nuclear bomb being loaded onto the bomber.
