Fires broke out with the explosion across the hypocenter. These spread and caused a firestorm. The smoldering fires continued to spread and engulf the town. Several hours after the bombing, Nagasaki Station and the Nagasaki Prefectural Government caught fire. They were located 2.4km and 3.3km away from the hypocenter. The fires covered an area 6.7km²; one-third of the city. A total of 79 districts were either burned to the ground or partially destroyed by the fires.
