This is Mr. Senji Yamaguchi. He was 14 years old and in the first year of Nagasaki Prefectural Technical School at that time. He was bombed while he was digging an air-raid shelter at the back of Mitsubishi Nagasaki Arms Factory Ohashi plant, 1.4 kilometers away from the hypocenter. He became unconscious at the moment of the flash, and when he regained consciousness he found himself surrounded by a number of corpses and many people running back and forth around him. He suffered severe burns on his face and body, and was hospitalized in the Omura Navy Hospital. He suffered from high fever and diarrhea along with pain from the burns. He was hospitalized for eight months.
He was embarrassed when infants carried on their mothers' back started to cry as soon as they saw him in the town. He could not find a job upon taking physical examinations, even if he passed the paper screening.
He participated in No. 2 Special Session of the UN General Assembly on Disarmament held in 1982 as a civilian representative of NGO, and talked about his own atomic bombing experience while showing his photograph and appealed for the elimination of nuclear weapons.
The testimony of Mr. Yamaguchi can be heard in the video corner of "Appeals of the Atomic Bomb Survivors".
